Umstead has served as a Board Director for the National Association of Minorities in Communications, a non-profit cable telecommunications industry organization that educates, advocates and empowers for multi-ethnic diversity in the communications industry.

Umstead also served as a Board Director for the Greater Centennial Credit Union, a non-profit banking institution

He is currently as member of the Television Critics Association, which represents more than 220 journalists writing about television for print and online outlets in the United States and Canada.
